Lavender Legal Center | Seeking Administrative and Legal Assistant

Description: Lavender Legal Center seeks an Administrative & Legal Assistant in Iowa. The Administrative & Legal Assistant is responsible for taking care of routine daily operations, including handling clerical tasks, organizing documents, maintaining office facilities and processes, handling finances, ensuring compliance with legal and administrative procedures, and providing support to the legal team, all while aligning with the mission and goals of Lavender Legal Center. This is a remote position with regular in-person meetings with the Executive Director and Office Manager.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Managing office operations alongside the Office Manager

  • Overseeing front desk operations, answering phone calls, and directing inquiries

  • Maintaining filing systems, both physical and digital

  • Coordinate complex calendars, schedule team meetings, book appointments, and handle travel arrangements

  • Managing technology needs and implementing/maintaining software

  • Drive brand awareness and generate leads, including the creation of social media content

  • Coordinating fundraising activities 

  • Ensuring adherence to all legal and regulatory requirements 

  • Generating reports on office operations and key metrics

  • Drafting memos

  • Drafting letters on behalf the Executive Director and Executive Board

  • Preparing legal correspondence, contracts, and court documents such as motions

  • Organizing and maintaining case files (both physical and digital), managing calendars, and tracking deadlines

  • Other tasks as assigned, allowing the Executive Director and Attorneys to focus on higher-level responsibilities

Qualifications: Lavender staff provide a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environment for the LGBTQ community. They aim to promote the dignity, equality, and safety of LGBTQ people. An applicant should have excellent written and oral communication skills. Lavender staff must have strong interpersonal skills. They are required to maintain confidential and sensitive information and should have exceptional organizational and time management skills. They should possess high attention to detail. They provide assistance with donor management record keeping and fundraising, including events. The Administrative & Legal Assistant provides support to the Executive Director and Office Manager. The Assistant must have computer and general software literacy, with proficiency (or ability to quickly learn) in cloud computing, productivity and collaboration tools, software and products; accounting software; and donor management software. They should have experience in office management, and an understanding of non-profit operations and fundraising practices. The best law office assistants are especially skilled at quickly evaluating the urgency of problems and then providing solutions. Applicants must demonstrate a firm commitment to Lavender’s mission and principles.

Education & Experience: Applicants with a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience are preferred. A public interest background and/or prior experience working or otherwise identifying with the LGBTQ community is preferred. Salary & Benefits:​ This position is part-time, with an average of 15-20 hours per week. Lavender uses an egalitarian pay scale. Full-time staff have an annual salary of $60,000, so this part-time position will begin at the prorated amount of $32.97/hour. Excellent fringe benefits are available, including time off for all major holidays and prorated PTO, employer SIMPLE IRA matching, twelve weeks of parental leave, and a flexible work schedule with majority remote work.
